Your Ultimate Guide to Charleston’s Southern Charm
Charleston, or the ‘Holy City’ as it’s lovingly called, is one of those places that pulls you in with its Southern charm and keeps you coming back for more. I recently took a trip there with my grandma and it turned out to be the perfect getaway for us both. It’s the perfect spot for a girls’ trip! We spent two days exploring, but we could have easily spent three or four. Whether you’re wandering through the cobblestone streets of the historic district, soaking up the riverside views, or diving into some amazing Lowcountry cuisine, Charleston has something special to offer everyone. And trust me, there’s no shortage of things to do!

This iconic hotel has all the luxuries you could want—think plush rooms, a full-service spa, a rooftop pool, and dining options that have won several awards. For an extra-special stay, check out the exclusive Club Level, where you’ll get your own dedicated staff and enjoy all-day snacks and drinks in a private lounge.
Good to know: Not only is the hotel pet-friendly, but so is Charleston itself! You can even bring your dog along for a carriage ride through the historic district.
Mid-Range Option: The Ansonborough
For a comfortable stay that blends charm and affordability, The Ansonborough hits the sweet spot in Charleston’s historic district. Vacation Rental Options
If you’re looking for a little extra space and a more homey feel, a vacation rental can be a fantastic option in Charleston. My grandma and I wanted room to spread out during our stay, so we opted for an Airbnb, and it was perfect for us. Charleston has plenty of vacation rentals options so you can find something that fits your style and needs. Plus, staying in a neighborhood gives you a real feel for the local vibe.
What to See and Do
Take a Horse and Carriage Ride
A horse and carriage ride is one of the best ways to experience Charleston’s charm, and it’s exactly how my grandma and I kicked off our trip! It was the perfect way to get an overview of the city while learning some fun historical tidbits along the way. The guides are full of fun stories and local history, giving you a unique glimpse into Charleston’s charm. We were also happy to learn that the horses’ well-being is a top priority. The city regulates their working conditions, including schedules, rest breaks, and even temperature limits to keep them comfortable. If you’re interested, check out the Old South Carriage Company—they’re great!
Explore Charleston’s Historic Churches
If you’ve read any of my other guides, you know I love exploring churches—and so does my grandma! Charleston, lovingly called “The Holy City,” is full of stunning and historic churches that are a must-see. Each church offers a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage, from the Gothic Revival elegance of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to the unique, rounded structure of the Circular Congregational Church.
Here are a few of our favorites:
- St. Michael’s Episcopal Church – Built in 1761, this is Charleston’s oldest surviving church, with a beautiful 186-foot steeple and gorgeous stained-glass windows.
- Cathedral of St. John the Baptist – Completed in 1907, this Gothic Revival landmark boasts soaring ceilings, intricate stonework, and breathtaking stained glass.
- Circular Congregational Church – Dating back to 1681, this church is known for its rare circular shape, and it has retained much of its original charm through the years.
- French Huguenot Church – Founded in 1681, this is one of the oldest active Huguenot congregations in the U.S., with graceful Gothic Revival architecture and peaceful stained-glass windows.
Each of these churches left us with something memorable and are well worth a visit for anyone exploring Charleston!
Stroll Through The Battery and Rainbow Row
A walk through the Battery and Rainbow Row is such a great way to soak in Charleston’s charm and unique architecture. The Battery, a historic waterfront promenade, offers up amazing views of Fort Sumter, the harbor, and some of the city’s most impressive homes. We couldn’t get enough of the gorgeous flower boxes decorating the houses along the way! Just around the corner, Rainbow Row’s colorful 18th-century houses are perfect for a photo stop. As you stroll through these picturesque neighborhoods, you’ll find plenty of architectural details to admire and stories to uncover about Charleston’s rich history and culture.
Nathaniel Russell House
This stunning historic home from 1808 is known as one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in the country. My grandma and I took a guided tour, where we were blown away by the intricate plasterwork, beautiful wood carvings, and period furnishings. The tour guides were fantastic, sharing stories that made the history of the house come alive.
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens
Dating back to the 17th century, Magnolia Plantation is an unforgettable stop with 60 acres of lush gardens and scenic views. We especially appreciated the “From Slavery to Freedom” tour. It offers powerful insights into the lives of the enslaved people who worked on the plantation. The Nature Train was another highlight, giving us a fun, relaxing way to explore the grounds and spot wildlife like birds, alligators, turtles, and even deer!
Fort Sumter
Located on an island in Charleston Harbor, it’s where the first battle of the Civil War took place. You can take a ferry out to the fort and wander through the ruins, marveling at the history surrounding you. With breathtaking views of the harbor and skyline, it’s a perfect spot for history buffs and photography lovers alike.
Relax at the Beach
When we needed a break from sightseeing, the beaches around Charleston—Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Folly Beach—were perfect. Each has its own unique vibe, offering everything from swimming and surfing to fishing. We enjoyed exploring the little beach towns, stopping by local restaurants, shops, and galleries.
Charleston City Market
No trip to Charleston is complete without a stop at the Charleston City Market. It has been buzzing in downtown for over 200 years. My grandma and I loved browsing the market’s many stalls, which sell everything from handmade crafts and jewelry to delicious local treats. It’s a lively place full of history, and many of the vendors are happy to share stories that give you an inside look at Charleston’s unique culture.
Where to Eat in Charleston
California Dreaming
After a long travel day, we enjoyed a laid-back meal at California Dreaming for our first dinner. The casual atmosphere, good food, and stunning views of the Ashley River made it a lovely place to unwind and prepare for our adventures in Charleston.
Rarebit
This restaurant and bar has a cool retro vibe and is known for their out-of-this-world Moscow Mules! I was pleasantly surprised by their delicious vegan options.
Callie’s Hot Biscuits
You can’t visit Charleston without stopping by Callie’s! Known for their freshly baked, made-from-scratch biscuits, we both agreed they were irresistibly soft and fluffy. With a variety of flavors—both savory and sweet—picking just one was a delicious challenge!
Miller’s All Day
This cozy diner quickly became a favorite of ours. Specializing in traditional Southern breakfast, brunch, and lunch with a modern twist, it was the perfect spot to fuel up for a day of exploring. My grandma loved their classic dishes, like a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato bisque.
Charleston captured our hearts with its rich history, stunning architecture, and warm Southern hospitality.
