Hawaii’s beaches offer a true paradise! From the soft white sands of Oahu to the lush, mountain-framed beaches of Kauai, every shore in Hawaii has a different personality. Whether you’re visiting for adventure, looking for a family-friendly getaway, or simply dreaming of a tranquil escape, Hawaii’s beaches are ready for you.

I’m fortunate enough to travel to Hawaii often for work, which has given me the chance to visit many of its beaches firsthand. Over time, I’ve discovered a few favorites that I keep coming back to, and I’m excited to share them with you here.

But choosing the “best” beaches in Hawaii can feel like picking your favorite star in the sky. That’s why I’ve done the work for you—exploring (and occasionally sunburning) my way through these islands to find the beaches you simply can’t miss in 2025. Best Beaches on Oahu

Lanikai Beach

Let’s start with Lanikai Beach, a place that truly lives up to the hype. The sand here is so soft it’s like walking on powdered sugar. The water is that impossibly clear turquoise you’d expect to see in a postcard. Pro tip: this is the ultimate spot for sunrise. If you’re a morning person (or can force yourself to be one just this once), head here early to watch the sun peek over the Mokulua Islands.   But fair warning: parking near Lanikai is a headache. Get there early or be prepared to walk a bit from Kailua Beach Park. Totally worth it, though. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you.

Kailua Beach Park

Speaking of Kailua, it’s just down the road from Lanikai and offers a more family-friendly vibe. This beach has all the amenities you didn’t know you needed: bathrooms, showers, parking , and shady spots under the trees. The water is calm, making it perfect for paddleboarding or swimming with little ones. Kailua Beach Park is the kind of spot where you can spend the whole day without anyone getting bored.

Shark’s Cove

If snorkeling is on your Hawaii bucket list, Sharks’ Cove is the place to give it a try. Don’t let the name scare you, you will be safe here. This rocky cove on Oahu’s North Shore is teeming with colorful fish, coral, and other marine life. I’ll admit, the first time I snorkeled here, I was a little freaked out by how close the fish got, but now I can’t get enough.

Summer is the best time to visit since the waters are calmer, and make sure to bring water shoes because the rocks can be rough on your feet. Also, there aren’t a ton of facilities here, so pack snacks, water, and anything else you might need.

Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach)

This one’s for the wildlife lovers! Laniakea Beach, or Turtle Beach as it’s affectionately called, is famous for—you guessed it—sea turtles. You’ll often spot them basking on the sand or swimming near the shore. It’s such a serene experience, but remember to keep your distance and respect the turtles—they’re protected, and getting too close can disturb them.

The vibe here is quieter compared to other beaches, which makes it perfect if you’re looking to escape the hustle. Just note that parking is limited, so give yourself some extra time for your visit. 

Best Beaches on Maui

Maui’s beaches are a mix of luxury and adventure, and honestly, that’s why it’s one of my favorite islands. Whether you’re snorkeling, surfing, or just soaking up the sun, there’s something for everyone here. Ka’anapali Beach

Ka’anapali Beach is one of Maui’s most iconic spots—and for good reason. This long stretch of golden sand is lined with upscale resorts, restaurants, and shops, making it the ideal base for a beach day. The snorkeling at Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a) is top-notch, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a sea turtle or two while you’re out there.

Stick around for sunset—it’s vibrant and picture-perfect. And if you’re staying nearby, grab dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants. Nothing beats an incredible meal with an ocean view. Each evening, you can also catch the nightly dive off Black Rock, where divers honor a historic Hawaiian tradition by leaping from the cliff with a torch in hand—an unforgettable spectacle.

Kapalua Bay Beach

For something a bit quieter, Kapalua Bay Beach is a dream. This crescent-shaped beach is surrounded by palm trees and offers calm waters that are ideal for snorkeling and paddleboarding. There’s even a coral reef just offshore where you can spot tropical fish.

It’s also a great beach for families since the water is so gentle. Pro tip: get there early to grab a parking spot and enjoy the tranquility before the crowds show up.

Wai’anapanapa State Park

Wai’anapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana is like stepping into another world. The black sand beach here is stunning, framed by jagged lava rocks and lush greenery. You can explore sea caves, hike along the coastal trails, or just sit back and take in the dramatic views.

Word of advice: wear sturdy shoes if you plan on exploring the lava tubes or hiking trails—the terrain can be a bit rough. And don’t forget your camera because this place is so photogenic. 

Best Beaches on Big Island

Big Island’s beaches are as diverse as the island itself. From pristine white sand to volcanic black shores, there’s a little something for everyone. The island’s rugged coastline is a haven for unique beach experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

Punalu’u is the poster child for black sand beaches, and it’s as unique as it sounds. The contrast of the dark sand against the lush greenery and bright blue water is something you have to see to believe. Plus, this beach is a favorite hangout spot for Hawaiian green sea turtles. Watching these gentle creatures basking on the sand is one of the highlights of visiting Punalu’u.

The sand can get incredibly hot, so bring sandals or water shoes. And if you’re a history buff, take some time to explore the nearby ancient Hawaiian ruins. It’s a beach day with a touch of culture and history thrown in, which is always a win in my book.

Hapuna Beach

If you’re after a classic white sand beach, Hapuna is where it’s at. This beach is massive, which means even on busy days, you’ll still have plenty of space to spread out. The sand is soft, the water is clear, and the vibe is pure relaxation. It’s perfect for families, with calm waters for swimming and plenty of room for kids to run around.

One tip: bring a beach umbrella because there’s not much shade here. There’s also a small food truck nearby, but packing your own picnic is a good idea if you’re planning to stay all day. Hapuna is the kind of beach where you could lose track of time, and honestly, that’s the best kind of day.

Manini’owali Beach (Kua Bay)

Tucked away on the Kona coast, Manini’owali Beach is a secluded paradise. The sand is pristine, the waters are crystal clear, and the scenery is straight out of a postcard. It’s a fantastic spot for snorkeling, swimming, or just lounging on the beach with a good book.

One of my favorite memories here is spotting dolphins playing in the distance—it’s like they were putting on a private show just for us. Parking can be limited, so aim to arrive early. And don’t forget your snorkeling gear; the underwater views here are just as stunning as the ones above.

Kauai’s beaches are all about tranquility and natural beauty. This island feels like it was designed for unwinding, with its lush landscapes, peaceful vibes, and beaches that could make even the most stressed-out traveler feel Zen. Poipu Beach Park

Poipu Beach is often hailed as one of the most family-friendly beaches in Hawaii, and it’s easy to see why. The water is calm, there are lifeguards on duty, and the facilities are top-notch. It’s the perfect place for snorkeling, picnicking, or just relaxing in the sun.

One of the highlights of Poipu Beach is the chance to spot Hawaiian monk seals. These adorable creatures often come ashore to nap, and while it’s important to keep your distance, it’s such a treat to see them in their natural habitat. 

Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach)

Tunnels Beach is a snorkeler’s dream come true. The coral reefs here are teeming with colorful fish, and the dramatic cliffs that back the beach make for an unforgettable setting. Even if you’re not into snorkeling, this beach is worth visiting just for the views.

I’ll never forget the first time I snorkeled here. The water was so clear that it felt like I was swimming in an aquarium. Visit during the summer when the waters are calm, and don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks, as there aren’t many facilities nearby.

Hanalei Beach

Hanalei Beach is pure magic. Picture a wide, crescent-shaped beach surrounded by emerald-green mountains—it’s like something out of a dream. The water here is calm and perfect for paddleboarding or kayaking, and the nearby town of Hanalei is charming and full of great spots to grab lunch or a coffee.

One of my favorite things to do here is rent a kayak and paddle along the Hanalei River. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a great way to spend a morning before lounging on the beach. If you’re looking for a beach that combines natural beauty with a laid-back vibe, Hanalei is it.
