Bruges Travel Tips: Your Ultimate Guide to a Fairytale Getaway

Recently, I had a week off from work and knew I wanted to travel to Europe, but I wasn’t exactly sure where to go. So, googled the cheapest flight to Europe from Los Angeles. That led me to Belgium. I knew that I would want to visit Belgium eventually, but it wasn’t exactly at the top of my bucket list. I’m so glad I went! Belgium was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever explored. From the stunning architecture to the incredible food and wonderfully kind people, every moment felt special. If you’re planning a trip to Belgium for the first time, you’re in for an amazing adventure! I’ve put together some guides on the cities I visited (Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, and Brussels) to show you the best of Belgium, including where to stay, what to do, and where to eat. So here are my best travel tips for Bruges…

I kicked off my Belgian vacation in Bruges, spending two delightful days there. If you enjoy a slower pace, you could easily stretch your visit to four days to truly soak it all in. As the capital of the Flanders region, Bruges boasts a historic center that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cobblestoned streets, picturesque canals, and medieval buildings made me feel like I had stepped into a fairy tale. Just wandering around felt like living in a postcard!

Practical Tips

Getting to Bruges
I flew into Brussels Airport (BRU) and hopped on a train straight to Bruges. The ride was smooth and took about an hour and a half. The train was clean and easy to navigate—a perfect, stress-free way to kick off my adventure! Once you arrive in Bruges, the charming city center is just a short walk from the train station, so you can dive right into the sights! If you’re looking for other options, there’s also Ostend-Bruges International Airport (OST). It’s smaller and doesn’t offer direct flights from the US, so you would need to arrange a connecting flight.

Getting Around in Bruges
You’ll find that Bruges is incredibly walkable. I didn’t need a car or an Uber at all during my stay, which was refreshing.

Weather
I was lucky to experience perfect weather in August! Bruges enjoys a temperate maritime climate, so you can expect mild summers and cool winters. Spring and early fall are particularly lovely for exploring. Just remember, rain can happen anytime, so pack an umbrella and wear layers to stay comfortable.

Language
Belgium has two official languages: Dutch and French. In Bruges, Dutch is predominantly spoken, but don’t worry—many locals speak English, especially in tourist spots. Learning a few basic Dutch phrases, like “hallo” (hello) and “dank je wel” (thank you), can go a long way in connecting with the friendly locals.

Currency:
Belgium uses the euro (€) as its currency, and ATMs are plentiful throughout the city. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it’s always wise to carry some cash for smaller shops or when enjoying street food. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory—rounding up your bill or leaving small change is a nice touch!

Bruges

I hope you find Bruges as charming and enchanting as I did. The city has a magical quality that lingers in your heart long after you leave, from the serene canals to the stunning architecture that seems to tell a story at every corner. Take your time to explore the hidden gems and savor the local flavors—each moment contributes to the unforgettable experience that is Bruges. I can’t wait to hear all about your adventures and the unique moments you discover in this fairy-tale destination!
