Where to Eat in Antwerp

Manhattn’s Burger

I have a confession…Sometimes when I’m a little worn out from traveling, I give up on trying to find the best local cuisine and just try to find the best burger – or in my case, veggie burger. In Antwerp, this led me to Manhattn’s, and it was great! They offer all kinds of burgers and a front patio to take in the life of the city.

Vreemdelingenmarkt

Also known as the Exotic Market or Saturday Market, this vibrant outdoor market is located at the Theaterplein in Antwerp. It operates every Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm and is renowned for its multicultural array of foods and flavors. This market is a hub for foodies and locals, offering an eclectic mix of fresh and international food items.

With its classic ambiance and a fantastic menu, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and savor the moment.

Companie Belge

I have such a sweet tooth and was so happy to find Companie Belge. They have the best homemade waffles and gelato. It’s located right in the center of Antwerp and is a great spot for a break during your sightseeing adventures.

Practical Tips

How to Get to Antwerp

Antwerp is incredibly well-connected and easy to reach. I originally flew into Brussels Airport (BRU) and took the train within Belgium. When it was time to leave Ghent, I took a direct train to Antwerp Central Station, which took about an hour. The journey was a breeze, and I was immediately impressed by the stunning architecture of the Antwerpen-Centraal Station upon arrival – it’s often called the “Railway Cathedral”! If you’re already in Europe, you might consider taking the high-speed Eurostar train from Paris, Amsterdam, or Cologne. Antwerp also has its own airport, Antwerp International Airport (ANR), which serves mainly regional European flights.

Getting Around in Antwerp

One of the things I loved about Antwerp was how easy it was to get around. The city center is compact and perfect for walking, allowing you to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture at your own pace. For longer distances or if you want to rest your feet, Antwerp has an excellent public transportation system. The trams and buses are efficient and cover most of the city.

Weather

I visited Antwerp in September and was treated to beautiful, mild weather – perfect for exploring! The city has a temperate maritime climate, similar to other Belgian cities. Summers are generally pleasant, while winters can be chilly but rarely extreme. Spring and early autumn are ideal times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds. As with any Belgian city, it’s wise to be prepared for rain at any time of year, so pack a light raincoat or umbrella.

Language

Antwerp is in the Flemish region of Belgium, so Dutch is the primary language. However, I found that English was widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, shops, and restaurants. Many locals also speak French. While you can certainly get by with English, learning a few Dutch phrases like “Goeiedag” (Good day) or “Dank u wel” (Thank you very much) can help you connect with the friendly Antwerpenaars (Antwerp locals).

Currency

Like the rest of Belgium, Antwerp uses the Euro (€). I found that most places accept credit cards, but it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases or in case you stumble upon a cash-only establishment. There are plenty of ATMs around the city, especially in the city center and near major attractions. As for tipping, it’s not obligatory in Belgium, but rounding up your bill or leaving a small amount for good service is appreciated, especially in restaurants.

Local Customs

Antwerp has a rich diamond trading history, and you’ll see many diamond shops around the city. If you’re interested in purchasing, make sure to buy from reputable dealers. The city is also known for its fashion scene, so don’t be surprised to see locals dressed stylishly even for casual outings. Antwerp is a very bike-friendly city, so be mindful of bike lanes when walking around. Lastly, try to greet shopkeepers when entering and leaving stores – it’s considered polite and is much appreciated by locals.

With its perfect blend of history, art, fashion, and culinary delights, Antwerp truly has something for everyone. From the moment you step into the breathtaking Central Station to your last bite of Belgian chocolate, this city will captivate you with its charm and energy. Whether you’re wandering through historic streets, admiring stunning architecture, or indulging in creative cuisine, Antwerp is a city that leaves a lasting impression. I hope this Antwerp travel guide helps you uncover the best of what this dynamic destination has to offer.
